While Hooverville might not fit the description of your standard Seattle “beer bar”, it’s always been a great bar with a laid back vibe, great people, lots of character and a very solid tap list. While I don’t visit as often as I’d like, I’d say it is one of my favorites in Seattle for sure. Just yesterday I was saying to my friend Colin that I need to get my butt in there more often. Well, sad news….according to several sources, a fire broke out in an office on the 2nd floor of the bar.
SEATTLE – It took firefighters about half an hour to put out a fire in a commercial building in Seattle on Wednesday morning.
Fire department spokeswoman Dana Vander Houwen said 66 firefighters responded at 7:40 a.m. to the report of smoke coming from the one-story building.
The mixed use building houses the Hooverville Bar and an automotive shop.
Vander Houwen said firefighters found the fire in an office. No one was in the building at the time of the fire.
Investigators determined that the fire was accidental, caused by an overheated ceiling fan. Damage was estimated at $400,000.
No word yet on how this will affect Hooverville’s future. According to divide’s comments on his Flickr page, the 2nd floor is completely destroyed and there is massive smoke and water damage on the main level. I’ll be hoping insurance covers the losses and they can get things going again…
