Washington Breweries Advance in 1st Round of Brewing News National IPA Championship

February 14th, 2010 · No Comments · General Beer News, Washington Breweries

This just in from Pike brewer Drew Cluley, who was on hand helping to judge the first round of the competition.

The 1st round of judging is done, 128 India Pale Ales tasted by 24 people in 3 judge pods. Each pod judged 8 games (16 samples)
They were blind and random. I got the pleasure of judging in 2 pods, pod #2 and 3 hours later pod #7.

Congratulations to:
Hales Super Goose; Elysian Stolen Fire/Prometheus; Pike IPA; Diamond Knot IPA; Port Townsend Hop Diggity; Fremont Brewing Interurban IPA; Black Raven Trickster;
Rogue Yellow Snow.

Sorry to see these not advance:
Boundary Bay IPA; Breakaway IPA ( beaten by Elysian ); Lazy Boy IPA ( beaten by Port Townsend ); Elysian Immortal IPA; Snoqualmie Falls Wildcat IPA; Rogue Brutal IPA; Redhook Long Hammer.

[ I don’t think I forgot any Washington beer that was entered in the challenge, but I am human, and I have been drinking ] – The Northern Lights is from a Virginia Bry.

BTW : ( Pike IPA was not in either of my pods ). I did however advance Hales, Diamond Knot and Rogue. Hales and Rogue was unanimous amongst us 3 judges, Diamond Knot advanced 2 to 1 – I in the majority.

Congratulations all who entered, it is a fun event with a lot of great tasting beer! The next round is in Buffalo next weekend – the NIPAC website will reveal all the results sometime late tonight or tomorrow.
It’s time to continue drinking.

Your on the scene reporter.
