Matt Bonney of Brouwer’s Cafe announces this year’s winners at the Hard Liver Barleywine Festival.

Congratulations to Glacier BrewHouse, located in Anchorage, Alaska, for taking 1st place in the judges rankings at Brouwer’s 8th Annual Hard Liver Barleywine Festival. Their Big Woody beat out 50+ other barleywines for the top honors. Big Woody is a 10.75% ABV beer that is aged in various oak barrels, including Jim Beam and Napa Valley wine barrels, for a minimum of a year. For those lucky enough to grab a taste of the award-winning beer, it should be no surprise that it came out on top. Here are the final results from the judges’ table:

1st Place – Glacier BrewHouse Big Woody 09
2nd Place – Big Sky Old Blue Hair 08
3rd Place – Anacortes Old Sebastes 09
Honorable Mention – Firestone Walker Abacus 09

Hundreds of barleywine lovers came out as early as 11am (well, 9am for judges!) to get their fill of the potent lineup available for this year’s festival. If you missed out this weekend, there should be plenty of barleywine left at Brouwer’s this week to get your fix.

Barleywine on its way to the judges.
