Intro: Summer beers come in many shapes and sizes. But, good craft lagers are still a huge minority in the Seattle area, even during the warmer months. Silver City sets out to change that with this unfiltered German-style “Zwickelbier”.

Description: Pours a hazy golden with big head. Even in appearance, this is not your typical lager; looks beautiful in the glass. A subtle grassy/hay aroma is there in the nose, along with a little citrus. A honey sweetness works with a light caramel/cracker malt base, and more grassy/hay flavors come through. A mild and welcoming bitterness evens things out in the finish and lingers a bit. This 5% ABV lager could change your perception of what a lager should be. It’s flavorful without getting too big. These days, I’m not sure there is anything I enjoy more than a beer light in alcohol that doesn’t have to sacrifice flavor, and this comes through in a big way. This will be in my fridge often this summer.

Having just enjoyed this beer for the first time (quite tasty!), I decided to read your review… and it’s a bit confusing to me.

“This 5% ABV lager could change your perception of what a lager should be. It’s flavorful without getting too big.”

Most lagers aren’t that “big” (bock styles aside), and quality ones are quite flavorful. Check out the offerings from Chuckanut, or spend some time at Prost, Feierabend, or The People’s Pub to have some excellent European lagers (I tend to find bottled offerings are severely oxidized by the time they get to Seattle, but kegs hold up ok).

“Even in appearance, this is not your typical lager; looks beautiful in the glass.”

And this I just don’t get. You seem to imply that most lagers aren’t beautiful in the glass. And if that isn’t what you’re implying, what exactly do you mean?

Yuppers – a lot of my beer reviews I do with the general beer drinker in mind (most of these reviews are posted on the Seattle Times), not always the person who already knows how great Chuckanut and the German imports are. When the general population in the US thinks of a lager, they think of macro lagers. That is the comparison I had in mind when saying “This 5% ABV lager could change your perception of what a lager should be. It’s flavorful without getting too big.” and “Even in appearance, this is not your typical lager; looks beautiful in the glass.”
