October 10th, 2011 · 2 Comments · Events, Oregon Breweries, Washington Breweries

Just a reminder to mark your calendars for the Washington vs. Oregon Fresh Hop Throwdown coming up at The Noble Fir this Saturday, October 15 at 4pm. The full lineup of beers can be found below. Beers will be available in 20oz pints, or you can get a flight of 3 beers in 13oz glasses. My suggestion is to grab some friends and share some flights so you get to try as much as possible. There is no entry fee, just pay as you go. There may also be a few different backup fresh hop kegs to put on tap if and when any of these beers run out.

Here is all the info we have on these beers at the moment:

Oregon Fresh Hop Beers

Brewery: Deschutes Brewery
Beer Name: Fresh Hop Mirror Pond
Fresh hops Used: Cascade
This noble, fresh hop version of our classic American pale ale arose from a single plot of heirloom Cascade hops. Revived by our brewers from the original rootstock developed at Oregon State University, grown by Goshie Farms in Oregon, this very limited release is just for you.
5.0% ABV 40 IBUs

Brewery: Double Mountain Brewery
Beer Name: Killer Red
Fresh hops Used: Perle
It’s harvest time again, which means using just-picked hops straight from Sodbuster Farm in the Willamette Valley. Our choice of hops for the Killer Green were a little late this year, so we decided to craft a sister brew with fresh Perles to fill the thirsty void. Killer Red has distinct apple/pine/orange notes from the hops, and pulls that biscuit/caramel character you find in our India Red Ale (“IRA”). Drinks like it’s IRA, but the extra strength is worth respecting.
7.2% ABV 88 IBUs

Brewery: Full Sail Brewery
Beer Name: Hopfenfrisch Pilsner
Fresh hops Used: Perle
Brewed with fresh harvested Perle hops, a close cousin to the North Brewer hop, these hops give the beer a strong herbal character with classic pils hop aromas. Combined with our lager yeast, these flavors make for a classic pilsner beer which give the beer a pleasant hop character. This pale gold aromatic
brew was left unfiltered to preserve its smooth body and honeyed malt flavors. This beer is crisp and clean.
5.7% ABV 53 IBUs

Brewery: Hopworks Urban Brewery
Beer Name: Give Me Liberty…
Fresh Hops Used: Organic Liberty
We celebrate this hop harvest with Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Hoppiness all rolled into one delicious beer. This beautiful Best Bitter is loaded with 125 lbs of Organic Liberty Hops, picked fresh off the vine and tossed in the kettle only 3 hours after harvest. Packed full of spicy, floral and lemony hop aroma and flavor, our newest fresh hop brew is bound to have you calling, “Give Me Liberty (beer), or Give me Death!”
4.6% ABV 30 IBUs

Brewery: Laurelwood Brewing Company
Beer Name: Fresh Hop Cavalry IPA
Fresh Hops Used: Chinook
The new hop crop rides to the rescue! We brewed up this strong IPA to celebrate the new hop crop. We used a similar malt bill as our Workhorse IPA, but left out the dry hops. Then, when fermentation was complete, we transferred the batch onto over 100#s of fresh Chinook hops that had been picked less than 24 hours previously in Yakima, WA. We then let the beer extract all the subtle wet hop flavors and aromas, leaving the beer with a very rounded herbal depth and spiciness that you cannot get from the standard dry hops brewers use. This is a totally unique and very seasonal and regional beer.
7.3% ABV 70 IBUs

Brewery: Ninkasi Brewery
Beer Name: Fresh Hop Tricerahops
Fresh Hops Used: Amarillo

Brewery: Oakshire Brewing
Beer Name: Triune Wet Hop Pale Ale
Fresh Hops Used: Fuggle, Cascade and Magnum Hops from three Willamette Valley Farms.
Triune is a hazy golden pale ale-style beer with a subtle floral and earthy aroma. Mild bitterness at the front marries a solid malt body with overtones of spiciness. A bit of fresh hop flavor lingers behind.
5.9% ABV

Washington Fresh Hop Beers

Brewery: 7 Seas Brewing
Beer Name: Hop Prophet
Fresh hops Used: Amarillo and Centennial
Come late August and early September, the abundant hop cones swarming the Yakima valley reach their fruition. Wet, saturated, and dripping with essential oils and resins, they are ready for harvest. Once a year, we are presented an opportunity to brew Hop Prophet, a ‘wet’ hop ale utilizing Amarillo and Centennial varieties that go from ‘vine’ to ‘kettle’ within hours. Exclusively brewed with wet hops at a rate of over 7 LBS per BBL (31gal) of beer, the Hop Prophet yields an aroma of fresh citrus zest followed by a delicate, yet pronounced juicy bitterness. A blend of domestic Pale Ale malt, British Marris Otter malt, and a touch of crystal malt, contribute a clean, off-dry mouthfeel with subtle notes of honey and melon fruit. With benevolence, good-will, and transcendence, the Hop Prophet bestows his almighty powers towards a successful harvest and his grace towards the hard working individuals toiling amongst the sun and soil of our treasured hop growing regions of Washington State.
5.8% ABV

Brewery: Big Al Brewing
Beer Name: Harvest Ale
Fresh hops Used: Sorachi Ace
We used 4 pounds per barrel of fresh Yakima Sorachi Ace hops in our Harvest Ale. These unique hops offer big citrus and fresh lemon flavors and aromas which we paired with deeply refined malt flavors mark this rich and warm-ing medium-bodied Amber ale. Brewed to honor the end of our Summer labors and the change of season, Harvest Ale will help take the edge off those cool early Autumn evenings.
5.4% ABV 59 IBUs

Brewery: Big Time Brewery
Beer Name: Fresh Hop Bhagwan’s Best IPA
Fresh hops Used: Cascade
Description: During the brewing of a “regular” batch of Bhagwans IPA we added 30 lbs of fresh wet hops to the mash.
This particular keg was then futher hopped with 12 ounces of fresh Cascade and Columbus hop cones. While not exclusively fresh hopped, this keg benefits from the addition of both fresh and pellet hops.
The fresh hops came from Head Brewer Drew Cluley’s yard as well as a neighbor’s.
5.5% ABV 60 IBUs

Brewery: Iron Horse Brewery
Beer Name: Fresh Hop Imperial Red
Fresh hops Used: Simcoe
7.5% ABV

Brewery: Paradise Creek Brewery
Beer Name: Alpha Madness

Brewery: Schooner Exact Brewing
Beer Name: Amarillo Fresh Hop
Fresh hops Used: Amarillo
Used 60 pounds of 100% fresh Amarillo hops.
7.2% ABV

Brewery: Snipes Mountain Brewery
Beer Name: Fresh Hop IPA

Brewery: Two Beers Brewing
Beer Name: 2011 Fresh Hop
Fresh hops Used: Citra
An annual tradition for the Two Beers team includes a roadtrip to Yakima Valley to pick up just harvested hops for the creation of this true small batch beer. In addition to Fresh Hops (Citra) we used Amarillo, Simcoe, Centennial, and Cascade.
