There are a lot of seasonal summer releases that I look forward to each year, but possibly none more than Big Time Old Sol Wheatwine. This is Big Time’s summertime version of a barleywine, which they brew annually on the Lunar New Year and then release on the following Summer Solstice. It is not your typical summer beer, coming in at almost 10% alcohol by volume. But, it should be perfect to get you through our last stretch of dreary weather.
Old Sol is a big, hoppy, boozy and lightly sweet beer that really shines when it is fresh. While you might be tempted to cellar it like you would a barleywine, I personally think the hop aroma and flavors are what really make this beer special, and those flavors will mellow with age. The wheat malt helps make this an amazingly sessionable beer, despite its strength, and after having a couple of these last night it is safe to say the ABV might sneak up on you.
Old Sol is available for a limited time on tap and in 22oz bottles at the brewpub. Get it while you can.
