Washington Breweries Shine at GABF

September 28th, 2009 · 2 Comments · Events, Washington Breweries

Six different Washington breweries brought home a total of thirteen medals from the 2009 Great American Beer Festival (GABF) in Denver, CO, where more than 3,000 beers from 495 breweries across the country competed in 78 different categories.  A huge congrats to Mari & Will Kemper, Josh Pfriem, Jim Parker, and the rest of the team at Chuckanut Brewery! Located in Bellingham, WA, Chuckanut came home from this year’s GABF with four medals and also earned the coveted Small Brewpub and Small Brewpub Brewer of the Year award. This accomplishment likely won’t surprise anyone that has tried Chuckanut’s outstanding lagers and ales. Brewmaster Will Kemper has been a fixture in the brewing industry going way back to the days of Thomas Kemper Brewing, and he’s especially well-known for his excellent lagers these days. Chuckanut won gold medals in the European Style Dunkel and Vienna Style Lager categories, and they won silver medals in the German Style Schwarzbier and German Style Pilsener categories. Not bad for a brewery that just celebrated its 1st anniversary this past July!  Not to be overlooked, Silver City Brewery (who I recently profiled here) earned 3 medals. They took gold in the Old Ale or Strong Ale and Irish Style Red Ale categories, and they snagged a bronze in the International Style Pilsener category. Redhook and Pyramid both earned two medals, and the Tacoma RAM and Snipes Brewing each took home one medal each. Congrats again to all of the winning WA breweries!

HUGE congrats to you guys, too, madbeerman!

Don’t think I’ll be making it for the Tacoma fest. I seriously need a weekend of laziness after a non-stop summer. It is tempting though….as is the Fresh Hop fest.
