Ready for another round of Seattle Beer Week madness? Below are some highlights followed by a complete list of events.
“The Odd Couple” with Charles and Sam – One of my favorite restaurants, Art of the Table, hosts Charles Finkel of Pike Brewing and Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head Brewing for an afternoon of small plates paired with their beers. As it takes place from 2pm to 5pm on a Wednesday, it will surely be difficult to attend for many, but it is worth your time if you can. It’s also not a bad reason to skip out of work early. Check out the link for the full menu.
Firkin Firkin at Elysian Capitol Hill – One of my favorite events from last year returns. This year it is WA vs OR, they will match 8 breweries from each state with 8 styles all in cask conditioned Firkins. From WA: Big Time, Pike, Silver City, Elysian, Naked City, Ram N-Gate, Black Raven & Fremont Brewing. From OR: Ninkasi, Rogue, Laurelwood, HUB, Pelican, Beer Valley, Bend Brewing & Double Mountain. They will honor last years winner Firestone Walker Union Jack IPA and have that on cask as well. Check out the link for the full beer list.
Sodo Boys at Full Throttle Bottles – Brewers from Epic Ales, Schooner Exact and Two Beers will be on hand to taste beers and talk about brewing and their beers.
Tomme Arthur Experience at Brouwer’s – I’m trying to highlight a variety of venues/events, but I could honestly probably sit at Brouwer’s every night during SBW and be happy. Tonight, join Lost Abbey and Port Brewing’s Tomme Arthur for rare beers, special vintages and food to go along with it. Check out the full list of beers, with serious rarities like Red Poppy, Duck Duck Gooze and Bourbon Barrel Aged Santa’s Little Helper. Jesus.

Geoff, any report on the Firkin-Firkin event? I have to live vicariously through your reports.
Hey Jeff – no report on results yet, but I’ll post when I get them.
Overall, it was a nice event and I love the idea….but it could be executed a little better. For instance, tough to judge a close to 5% ABV brown porter vs. a close to 10% ABV cherry baltic porter. They’re just completely different. Fun to drink, but the judging is probably not exactly fair. Should at least be done blind.
The IPAs were the highlight for me. Elysian Prometheus is a fantastic cask IPA.
Firkin Firkin results from Elysian: “We have tallied the votes and WA won by a landslide 70%-30% OK it is the home turf. The best of show was extremely tight in fact it was a tie between Fremont and Elysian (honestly)….”
I can’t argue with the 2 best in show picks.. They were both easily my favorite 2.
Thanks for the update. While I will normally rise to the defense of Oregon, I’ve been critical of our cask selections lately. On our state’s beer report card, that one would read “area needing improvement.” But we’re getting there! The center of cask activity is outside Portland. Deschutes makes some of the best cask ales, and in Corvallis there’s Block 15 and further east, in Oakridge, Brewers Union.
A little humility’s a good thing. Though I thought Double Mountain’s cask IRA was superlative. Hope it got some love. (And it is brutal going against my favorite WA brewer, too.)
