After losing a legal battle with their landlords, Water Street Brewing in Port Townsend will close its doors at their current location for good on Friday. If you are out on the peninsula, or you are up for a trip from the mainland, you can join them for one last bash at the pub tonight starting at 6pm. If you know Water Street, then you know this is going to be one hell of a sendoff.
The Peninsula Daily News has more details on the legal battle and what the future might hold for the brewery owners.
Beer Blotter has a heartfelt story titled: “The Hardest Post I’ve Ever Typed: The Death of My Heart, Water Street Brewing”. Regardless of what you thought of their beer these days, this post captures the place itself perfectly. Here is an excerpt:
I remember walking up and thinking – this is everything a brewpub should be. Its an over-sized, over-vaulted, sun sprayed, open-aired masterpiece. We can fill the pool of demographics with a sample of the bar crowd. You could swim in the smell of fresh beer wort filling the air. It was everything I had dreamed of – and there was more to come.

This is really sad. They’ve been struggling the last few years, but I hate to see it come to this. What will happen to their epic Strange Brewfest?
Thanks for paying homage to my tear-filled eulogy to my favorite place in WA.
I pray for a re-emergence. But, that building made up so much of what was epic.

Jeez, Geoff…….not only do you bait the hook you almost stuff the lure down my throat.
A great room that will be taken over by another business. It was a tavern/restaurant before Water Street and it will be a tavern/restaurant after Water Street.
I’d be disappointed if the building itself was being torn down and replaced with a Quik-Mart. These buildings and rooms, though, can’t be replaced.
I only wish I could get over there Friday, sad to see it go, a WA jewel and we all will miss SBF version 1-4. or was it 5? Who knows, it all gets fuzzy after the first few years. Cheers to WA beer!
