The North American Beer Awards took place this past week and 12 Washington breweries took home a total of 23 medals. This was the 17th year of the event; last year more than 1,400 beers were evaluated in the competition by more than 80 judges (no word yet on counts for 2013). The judging panel consists of brewers, certified judges and other qualified industry professionals.

Awards were given in 82 different style categories. Breweries from around the country entered beers in the competition, but the western US states seem to be particularly well represented. As often is the case at judging competitions, Chuckanut Brewery was the big winner from Washington with 5 total medals in different categories.
